In this article the conditions that govern surfactant‐enhanced emulsification and mobilization of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil are reviewed. The effect of soil properties, groundwater constituents, and differing surfactant solutions on the emulsification process is discussed. A constant head soil flushing apparatus used to characterize surfactant‐enhanced mobilization of m‐xylene is described. Data showing the effect of surfactant‐enhanced mobilization on m‐xylene removal efficiency in washed sand is presented. Flushing solutions were used at concentrations from below to well above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactants used. Removal efficiencies are shown to vary with surfactant concentration and with surfactant type. Flushing solutions of anionic, nonionic, and anionic/nonionic surfactant mixtures were evaluated.  相似文献

Currently, heavy metal (HM) contamination in greenhouse soils is a significant concern due to the rapid expansion of greenhouse agriculture. However, it is difficult to accurately assess HM pollution in greenhouse soils in China due to the lack of local geochemical baseline concentrations (GBCs) or corresponding background values. In the present study, the GBCs of HMs in Dongtai, a representative greenhouse area of China, were established from subsoils using cumulative frequency distribution (CFD) curves. The pollution levels of HMs and potential ecological risks were investigated using different quantitative indices, such as geo-accumulation index (Igeo), pollution index (PI), pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (RI), based on these regional GBCs. The total concentrations of six metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in surface soils were determined and shown to be lower than the concentrations reported in other greenhouse regions of China. The GBCs of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were 0.059–0.092, 39.20–54.50, 12.52–15.57, 20.63–23.26, 13.43–16.62 and 43.02–52.65 mg kg−1, respectively. Based on this baseline criterion, Cd, Pb and Zn accumulated in the surface soils because they were present at concentrations higher than their baseline values. The soils were moderately polluted by Cd according to the Igeo values, and the PI results indicated that moderate Cd contamination was present in this area. The large variation of Igeo value of Cd revealed that Cd in this area was likely influenced by agricultural activities. The PLI showed that most of the study area was moderately polluted. However, an analysis of the RI showed that the investigated HMs had low ecological risks. Correlation analysis and principle component analysis suggested that the Cd, Pb and Zn in the greenhouse soils mainly originated from anthropogenic sources (agricultural activities, atmospheric deposition etc.), while Cr, Cu, and Ni originated from natural sources. The findings of this study illustrated the necessity of GBC establishment at the local scale to facilitate more accurate HM evaluation of greenhouse soils. It is advisable to pay more attention to Cd, which could cause environmental problems in the greenhouse system.  相似文献

In our previous studies, we observed the biological control effect of lactic acid bacteria strains (LABs) KLF01, KLC02 and KPD03 against different plant pathogenic bacteria in vitro against Ralstonia solanacearum, and strains KLF01 and KLC02 against Pectobacterium carotovorum under greenhouse and field experiments, respectively. In this study, we observed the efficacy of these bacteria against bacterial spot pathogen (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) and their plant growth-promoting activities in pepper (Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum), under greenhouse and field conditions. LABs significantly (P < 0.05) reduced bacterial spot on pepper plants in comparison to untreated plants in both the greenhouse and the field experiments. The plant growth-promoting effect of LABs on pepper varied; some strains had a significant effect on growth promotion (P < 0.05) compared with untreated plants, while some showed no significant effect in the greenhouse and field experiments. Additionally, LABs were able to colonise roots, produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores and solubilise phosphate. These findings indicate that application of LABs could provide a promising alternative for the management of bacterial spot disease in pepper plants and could therefore be used as a healthy plant growth-promoting agent.  相似文献

2M NaCl-insoluble fraction of rat ventral prostatechromatin(residual proteins)contain proteins able tointeract specifically with androgen-receptor complex andis,therefore,a part of the acceptor complex.Amongresidual proteins,a 97 KDa protein has been found whichbinds signifieantly to a genomic fragment containingan androgen-regulated gene coding for a 22 KDa protein.The biological significance of this binding in androgenaction need to be further studied. A mini-plasmid clone containing 22 KDa proteincoding sequence was cloned into Charon 4A genomiclibrary from which a 5.7 Kb genomic fragment wasisolated,identified by hybridization with a 5' and a 3'cDNA probes,and shown to contain the 5' flankingsequence.Restriction enzyme treatment of this fragmentyielded a 4.7 Kb restriction fragment representingthe 5' upstream region and a 1.0 Kb containing part ofthe coding sequence.Deletion studies indicated that the97 KDa protein bound only to a subclone of about 300 bpsegment.Furthermore,gel shifting experiment supportedits DNA-prptein binding.  相似文献

In a recent paper in this journal (Rottschaefer and Martinsen 1990) we have proposed a view of Darwinian evolutionary metaethics that we believe improves upon Michael Ruse's (e.g., Ruse 1986) proposals by claiming that there are evolutionary based objective moral values and that a Darwinian naturalistic account of the moral good in terms of human fitness can be given that avoids the naturalistic fallacy in both its definitional and derivational forms while providing genuine, even if limited, justifications for substantive ethical claims. Jonathan Barrett (this issue) has objected to our proposal contending that we cannot hold for the reality of supervenient moral properties without either falling foul of the naturalistic fallacy or suffering the consequences of postulating inexplicable moral properties. In reply, we show that Barrett's explicit arguments that we commit either the definitional or derivational form of the naturalistic fallacy fail and that his naturalistic intuitions that supervenience explanations of moral properties by nonmoral properties force us into what we call the explanatory form of the naturalistic fallacy also fail. Positively, his objections help us to clarify the nature of the naturalistic fallacy within an evolutionary based naturalistic ethics and to point out the proper role of both supervenience explanations and moral explanations in such an ethics.  相似文献

Genetically modified cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens, chromosomally marked with genes for bioluminescence, were inoculated into sterile soil microcosms. During incubation for 90 days, viable cell concentration did not change significantly but light output, measured by luminometry, decreased, indicating reduced metabolic activity due to lack of substrates. Amendment with nutrients resulted in parallel increases in both luminescence and dehydrogenase activity. Luminometry therefore enables rapid monitoring of the activity of populations of luminescence-marked microbial inocula in the soil, with greater sensitivity and selectivity than traditional techniques.  相似文献

Morphologically intermediate plants between Weigela hortensis (Siebold & Zucc.) K.Koch and W. maximowiczii (S.Moore) Rehder have been found in Miyagi and Yamagata Pref., northern Japan. Quantitative character analyses of flowers, pollen stainability and molecular analyses indicated that the intermediate plants were hybrids of those two species. This is the first record of an intersectional hybrid with W. maximowiczii (sect. Weigelastrum ) as one of the parent species. The morphological differences among hybrid individuals imply the possibility of backcrosses or formation of second or later generations of hybrids, although those may be quite rare because of a low frequency of viable pollen grains.  The flowering of Clutia pulchella was studied in a coastal scarp forest community in southern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Sex dependent differences in the frequency and magnitude of floral output were recorded, with male individuals producing 4.32 times more flowers per leaf axis than females. Increased node production, as a manifestation of significantly increased branching, allowed for prolific flower production in males. Energy investment per flower was marginally greater in females (0.045 J/mg), despite copious pollen production and glandular secretion in males (0.035 J/mg). Differential flower production, reproductive organ dry mass and an unbalanced branching ratio revealed that “per plant” expenditure towards flowering was more pronounced in males (♀ flowering × 5.04). The elevated cost of fruit production (♀ flowering × 5.5), inclusive of imperfect fruit set, resulted in overall reproductive expense being slightly higher for females. Such sex-dependent reproductive investment was shown to have minimal influence on the population sex ratio, with sex frequencies and nearest neighbor distances yielding a non-significant male bias of 1.16.
